MYO Forms Partnership with Pride Academy

MYO has developed a new partnership with The Pride Academy including weekly lessons at the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center. Pride Academy provides all-day childcare for children ages 0-4 and after school care for children ages 5-12 and serves underserved children in desperate need. 

 

 

One of the goals of Pride Academy is ensuring every child is equipped with the proper knowledge to begin their educational journey.

 

The children learn fundamentals like how to find their spot in the classroom; how to listen and follow instructions; how to stand; how to hold their instrument and move their bow; rhythm through nursery rhymes and other simple activities; interaction; as well as patience, respect, and self confidence.  In addition to the weekly lessons, Pride Academy staff incorporated music time into their daily curriculum.

 

Play-A-Thon 2013!

We had such a great turnout this year at Play-A-Thon 2013! Over 500 students, musicians, parents, and members of the community came out to watch some of our very own perform at the McDonald's in Broad Ripple.

Senior, Zoe Black, Desgins Mural for the Julian Center

From Victims to Victory

On October 10, Herron High School collaborated with 114 Lilly employees for Indy Do Day.The students and Lilly employees painted 35 residential rooms at the Julian Center and a mural designed by MYO Senior, Zoe Black. 

The mural, entitled From Victims to Victory, was painted by Zoe and fellow students and is strategically placed as the women prepare to leave the Julian Center. It will inspire them to move beyond the abuse they have experienced into a new and better future.

 The original sketch of the mural will be permanently on display at Lilly’s Corporate Office. 

We are extremely proud of Zoe and her accomplishments so far!

The Julian Center, is a not-for-profit organization that provides assistance to victims of domestic violence.

Betty as a Teacher

Part 4: Get to Know the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra

Betty, Artistic Director of MYO, is a native of New York City and a product of the renowned Third Street Settlement Music School. She has held a career as a successful violist, master teacher and conductor. 

During her time with the Third Street Music School Settlement, Perry was inspired to devote her life to teaching and providing music opportunities for youth regardless of economic need.   Her focus was to use music as a vehicle to help strengthen families and to bring diverse communities together. To that end, Ms. Perry developed music programs for youth in cities throughout Indiana, including the Tri-County Youth Orchestra, the Ebony and Essence Chamber Orchestra, and currently the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra which was established in 1995.

Perry attended the New York College of Music, Mannes College of Music, and Butler University.  She was a co-founder and former principal violist of the Harlem Symphony Orchestra in NYC.  Perry has been a member of the Symphony of the New World, NYC, the Richmond Symphony, IN and has held principal positions in the Kokomo Symphony and the Wabash College Chamber Orchestra.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: CALEB MARTIN




MYO Senior, Caleb Martin, graduated from IPS Key Learning Community where he participated in orchestra and GSA.  Caleb will attend IUPUI where he will major in Performing Arts. Caleb enjoys writing novels and poetry and he plans to become a musician and a chef.
